COP17: THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF DEVELOPMENT FUNDS IN ADVANCING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS IS CONTINUING TO GROW

🌍 Addressing global challenges such as climate change, desertification, and land degradation requires not only effective policy frameworks but also sustainable, long term financing mechanisms. As a result, many countries are increasingly utilizing dedicated development funds to mobilize public, private, and international capital in support of their strategic development priorities.

🇲🇳 Mongolia’s hosting of the Seventeenth Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 2026 provides an important international platform for advancing discussions on sustainable development, green finance, and climate investment.

Development funds play a critical role in:

✅ providing long term financing for national and local development priorities;
✅ mobilizing investment for green growth and climate adaptation initiatives;
✅ strengthening collaboration among governments, the private sector, and international development partners; and
✅ enhancing transparency, governance, and the efficient management of development capital.

🏙️ As part of Ulaanbaatar’s sustainable development agenda, the Ulaanbaatar Development Fund, Ulaanbaatar Green Fund, Ulaanbaatar Risk Management Fund, and Ulaanbaatar Startup Support Fund are being developed to establish a sustainable long-term financing framework for the City’s strategic development priorities.

➡️ The discussions at UNCCD COP17 on sustainable development, climate finance, and investment to combat land degradation are expected to shape emerging approaches to urban development financing while further highlighting the strategic importance of dedicated development funds in delivering resilient and sustainable cities.
