A NEW ERA OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS BEGINNING IN THE CAPITAL CITY
As part of efforts to elevate Ulaanbaatar’s public transport system to a new level, the “Ulaanbaatar Tram” project is being planned for implementation. In this context, the Governor’s Office of the Capital City has announced a call to select a private-sector partner to implement “Ulaanbaatar Tram (Light Rail Transit – LRT) Line 2” under a public private partnership (PPP) framework.
The project will be implemented along the city’s north–south axis with two lines and double tracks:
Line I: Summer residential area – Sukhbaatar Square
Line II: General Archives Authority – Sukhbaatar Square
Trams will operate every 5 minutes, significantly reducing travel time for residents. By 2040, the project is estimated to reduce traffic time costs by USD 99.22 million per day, demonstrating substantial economic benefits.
Once implemented, the project will:
Significantly reduce road congestion in the city center
Improve bus short-turn operations and service speed
Reduce air pollution and noise impacts
Establish an environmentally friendly and sustainable public transport network
