COLLABORATING WITH THE WORLD BANK ON A FLOOD RISK REDUCTION PROJECT IN ULAANBAATAR
The Governor of the Capital City and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, Mr. Kh. Nyambaatar, together with the Chief Executive Officer of UBIM Mrs. G. Gangamurun, received a delegation led by Mr. Taehyun Lee, the World Bank Country Representative for Mongolia. The parties discussed the progress of ongoing joint projects and future plans for cooperation.
During the meeting, particular focus was placed on the Ulaanbaatar Flood and Water Risk Reduction Project. Within the framework of the project, discussions covered:
Construction of 102 km of flood protection dams and channels across 17 locations
Expansion of engineering infrastructure protection measures
Implementation of 50 km of wastewater pipelines and well lining works
According to assessments:
Approximately 560,000 residents are at risk of flooding
Potential economic losses could reach up to MNT 1.2 trillion
The parties emphasized the urgency of accelerating project implementation and expressed appreciation for the grant support provided for feasibility studies, detailed design, and environmental and social impact assessments.
Additionally, an international seminar on flood risk reduction is planned for April 2026.
The project is currently approximately 15% complete, and both sides highlighted the need to expedite its implementation moving forward.
The city leadership reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying project execution and achieving tangible results.
