COLLABORATING WITH THE WORLD BANK ON A FLOOD RISK REDUCTION PROJECT IN ULAANBAATAR

 

🇲🇳 The Governor of the Capital City and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, Mr. Kh. Nyambaatar, together with the Chief Executive Officer of UBIM Mrs. G. Gangamurun, received a delegation led by Mr. Taehyun Lee, the World Bank Country Representative for Mongolia. The parties discussed the progress of ongoing joint projects and future plans for cooperation.

➡️ During the meeting, particular focus was placed on the Ulaanbaatar Flood and Water Risk Reduction Project. Within the framework of the project, discussions covered:

✔️ Construction of 102 km of flood protection dams and channels across 17 locations

✔️ Expansion of engineering infrastructure protection measures

✔️ Implementation of 50 km of wastewater pipelines and well lining works

📊 According to assessments:

Approximately 560,000 residents are at risk of flooding

Potential economic losses could reach up to MNT 1.2 trillion

➡️ The parties emphasized the urgency of accelerating project implementation and expressed appreciation for the grant support provided for feasibility studies, detailed design, and environmental and social impact assessments.

✅ Additionally, an international seminar on flood risk reduction is planned for April 2026.

📊 The project is currently approximately 15% complete, and both sides highlighted the need to expedite its implementation moving forward.
