THE “TUUL EXPRESSWAY” PROJECT WILL HELP REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN ULAANBAATAR
The population of Ulaanbaatar and the number of vehicles continue to grow each year. As of 2024, more than 730,000 vehicles operate in the capital, generating approximately 1.8 million trips per day. During peak hours, the average traffic speed ranges between 7–13 km/h, highlighting the urgent need for new solutions to reduce congestion.
In response, the “Tuul Expressway” project is being implemented to expand the city’s road network and ease traffic pressure.
The project’s Feasibility Study (FS) and Detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) have been reviewed and approved by relevant professional institutions. These assessments confirm the project’s significant socio economic importance.
The project is aligned with Mongolia’s long-term development policy “Vision-2050”, the State Great Khural Resolution No.106 (2021), and the Ulaanbaatar Governor’s Action Program, among other policy frameworks.
Key Expected Impacts
Increase the average traffic speed from 7–13 km/h to 10–25 km/h
Reduce traffic load on major roads by 13.5%
Contribute up to 30% improvement in overall traffic congestion
Reduce transportation time and costs while improving economic productivity
Improve access to education, healthcare, and social services
Support the implementation of the “20-Minute City” urban planning concept
The Tuul Expressway is a strategically important infrastructure project aimed at expanding Ulaanbaatar’s road network and reducing transit traffic passing through the city center.
